As the weather warms, we are sure that like us, you are getting ready for Swimming Pool Season!

Spring is the ideal time to open up your pool in preparation for summer. Follow our simple tips below for a stress-free opening of your swimming pool.

It’s a good idea before you begin the below process to check you have all the chemicals you require to get your pool ready and safe for use! Be sure to double check expiry dates.

Clean the Surrounding Area

The first step is to sweep and clear the surrounding area to your pool. This includes giving the grass a mow before you remove your pool cover.

This will help reduce the amount of foliage and debris that can make it’s way into your pool.

This is also a good opportunity to check pool equipment including all your safety rails, ladders and diving boards to ensure they don’t require any repairs.

Removing and Cleaning the Winter Cover

Start by scraping off any leaves or debris from the pool cover. The next step is to use a pool pump to remove any standing water before you remove your winter pool cover from your swimming pool.

Once removed, lay out the cover and give it a clean with a winter cover cleaner and a gentle scrub brush.

After you have cleaned the cover, let it dry thoroughly before storing away. Store it in a sealed plastic container.

Test the pH

Before testing the pH of your pool, turn on the filter (make sure this is clean first!) and allow 12-24 hours to go by.

Get your test kit and test the pH of the water. It should be between 7.0 and 7.6. If it’s any higher use a winterising kit to bring it back down. If it is too low, try pH plus granules.

If you could like help testing your pool water, Spa-Kling offer FREE pool water testing. Just bring us a sample in store!

To get the best sample you should go in at least elbow deep and fill a clean bottle with the pool water.

Vacuum out any Debris

Use a telescoping brush to lift any leaves and debris that have settled at the bottom of the pool. Follow this with a pool vacuum to remove them.

Continue to let your filtration system run over night.

Time to Add Pool Chemicals

The next step is to shock your pool. Add 2-3 gallons of liquid shock directly into the pool. This will help kill any bacteria in the pool.

Make sure to wear safety goggles and gloves when adding chemicals to your pool. Then let the filter run for a minimum of 2 hours before adding algaecide, this is an important step to prevent scale and stains.

Once you have completed these steps, let your filter run for 24 hours before testing the water again.
